About Books for Black Women

We started this site with a simple belief: Black women deserve reading lists built for them, by people who read the books. Skip the algorithm and the dusty canon; what you get here are the recommendations of a well-read friend, with the reasons attached.

Meet the founder

Books for Black Women is founded by Morgan DeBaun, founder and CEO of Blavity Inc., the leading digital media company for Black culture and millennials, and the force behind AfroTech. She is also the national bestselling author of Rewrite Your Rules: The Journey to Success in Less Time with More Freedom. Between board meetings and book deadlines, she is exactly what this site is for: a Black woman who reads to recharge, to grow, and to feel seen.

Morgan built this corner of the internet because the books that shaped her, from bell hooks to Octavia Butler to the romance novels she finishes in one sitting, deserved a home that celebrates them the way her group chat does.

Rewrite Your Rules

by Morgan DeBaun

Morgan's national bestseller lays out the playbook she used to build a company, a portfolio, and a life on her own terms: success in less time, with more freedom. If you have ever felt like the default path was not built for you, this is the permission slip and the plan.
